The Quarterly Convention of the Monroe County Volunteer Firemen’s Association Inc. was called to order by the President, Mr. Alan C. Way at the Brockport Fire Department Exempts Facility, located at 448 West Avenue, Brockport, NY.

The Business Meeting was called to order immediately following a Picnic Dinner prepared by the host company (7:00 PM). The chefs did a wonderful job and the labor was most appreciated by the attendees.

The attendees were led in the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag by the Master-At- Arms, Mr. Gordon Burris and the Opening Prayer was offered by the Association Acting Chaplain, Mr. Donald H. Fox.

The Association 1st. Vice President, Mr. Lawrence A. Ritz rose to thank the host company for their kind invitation and work in preparing such a fine dinner for the members.
(Secretary’s Note….”There ain’t nothing like a good hot dog.”)

Mr. William Bostian, the 2nd Vice President then rose to introduce the attending guests of the Association.

With the taking of the roll call, it was determined that a quorum existed to conduct all business brought to the floor by the attendees.
The minutes of the previous meetings were approved on a motion called for by the presiding officer. 1st by Mr. R. Maid. 2nd by Mr. L. Leone.

There were two communications received by the Secretary and read to the attendees.
There was one bill presented to the Secretary and passed to the Treasurer for his workflow and payment.
Treasurer’s Report: Mr. J. Princehorn

There was a call for a motion to accept the Treasurer’s Report. 1st by Mr. R. Diehl. 2nd by Mr. M. Smith. The Treasurer’s report was carried by voice acclimation with no discussion.

The following Committees had no report at this time: Audit, Budget and Finance, (an e-mail from the Committee Chairman was read to the attendees regarding timely presentation of next year’s budget requests), Constitution and Bylaws, Fire Prevention Safety Trailer, Hospitality Room, Historical, Nominating, Public Relations, Special Events, Topics and Special.
Banquet Committee: Mr. W. Nichols
The Association Banquet will be held May 6, 2006 at Logan’s Party House.
Drills and Officials: Mr. R. Chichester
Mr. R. Chichester reported on the events held this year so far. There is a need, he states, for judges to officiate at these drills.
Emergency Medical Service: Ms. D. Pfersick

Explorers: Mr. W. Montagno
The Explorer weekend was held July 9, 2005 at the State Fire Academy in Montour Falls, NY. Due to its resounding success….the event will be a repeat.
The Gates Fire District will be swearing in a full time paid fire chief that started his long and distinguished career as an Explorer.
Fire Prevention Education: Mr. R. Emma
Mr. R. Emma reported on the possibility of having the Expo at St. John Fisher College next year.
Fire Prevention Essay Contest: Mr. D. Fox
The contest will start on October 5, 2005. This year’s theme will be “Use Candles with Care”.
Legislative: Mr. W. Nichols
Mr. W. Nichols reported on several bills that were of interest to the Fire Service and had FASNY backing. The Heart Bill and the Loan Fund were two of the most prominent.
It was reported that there 1,566 current individual members. 59 current organizations are currently paid. There are 1,461 FASNY members.
The $5.00 door prizes were won by Mr. F. Skelton and Ms. D. Pfersick.
Resolution: Mr. D. Fox
The report is in the file. Each name read was accompanied by a strike of the bell to signify their “Final Alarm”.
A short prayer was offered by Mr. Fox, the Association Acting Chaplain.
It was reported that the Web Page, www.mcvfa.com is doing well and improving with time and information provided to Mr. and Mrs. Dunn.
Steering Committee: Mr. D. Fox

Transportation: Mr. D. Sweet
Mr. D. Sweet reports that there will be a block of rooms at the Turf Inn. The Legislative Conference will be held at the Crown Plaza. 2006 will see the Conference return to the Turf Inn. There is also the possibility of a bus trip to the Conference next year with a side trip to the Firemen’s Home. More to follow as information becomes available.
Fire Advisory Board:
No report at this time.
Finger Lakes Burn Association:
The group is seeking ways to change focus and direction. The new President is Paul Schwartzman, PhD.
People who suffer burns are to be referred to as survivors….not as burn victims.
County Fire Chiefs: Mr. A. Sweet
August 10, 2005 is their Equipment Seminar. It will be held at Logan’s Party House. Tickets are $20.00 each and it will run from 3:00 PM till….
Their next meeting will be held in Scottsville, NY on September 14, 2005.
Fire Districts and Fire Marshals had no report at this time.
County Fire Police: Mr. L. Leone
Their Board of Directors meeting is to be held August 4, 2005 at the Training Facility.
September 1, 2005 will be the date of their Dinner Meeting. It will be held at the Spencerport Exempts Facility.
August 11, 2005 is the date of the 3rd Battalion Fire Police meeting. It will be held at Pittsford #2 Station.
FASNY: Mr. W. Nichols
He rose to inform the members to pay close attention to the Volunteer Firefighter for information regarding proposed by-law changes.
NCNYVFA: Mr. D. Sweet
Their next meeting is to be held in Benton Center, NY (Yates County) on September 25, 2005. Time relayed is 1:00 PM.
WNYVFA: Mr. K. Fuller

Chaplain’s Association and Coordinator’s Office had no report at this time.
Firemen’s Home: Mr. D. Fox
The four county residents are doing well at this time. It’s reported that the Museum is doing well and is worth a visit.
1st Battalion:
“Lots of reported lightning hits” during the last storm front.
2nd Battalion:
There was a fire at the LifeTime Assistance Facility in Brockport NY.
There were lots of alarms due to lightning strikes from the same storm discussed by the 1st Battalion Representatives.
Hamlin had 4 fire calls in 5 days. They were busy.
3rd. Battalion:
Due to an electrical feed line that fell into the canal, the canal was closed for a half day.
4th Battalion:
Churchville had a very serious traffic incident due to speed.
They also had a “good stop” due to a lightning strike.
5th Battalion:
They were busy due to storm related calls.
The open position in the 4th Battalion was discussed. There was one application letter received for this position. This will be taken up at the next meeting of the Directors. The letter is in the files.
It was reported that there are 42 recruits in the graduating class of July 25, 2005. Graduation will be held at the Strong Museum.
Mr. David Sweet discussed the Legislative Conference proposals and legislation proposed to cover the Explorer in the Fire Service. The question that must be dealt with is, “What can Fire Explorers do in the Fire Service?”
There was a discussion of what’s needed encompassing this legislation. There will be legislation introduced in the next session in Albany.
Mr. W. Schlegel discussed the legislation covering the ability of ambulances to recover fees for their work. The term used is, “Cost recovery.”

Mr. Way thanked all who came to the convention. He also reported to the attendees of his upcoming surgery.
The 1st Vice President: Mr. Lawrence A. Ritz

The 2nd Vice President: Mr. William Bostian
No report at this time.
Lucy Kramer was in the hospital due to a medical condition. A card was sent to her previously to her home.
With no additional business brought to the floor by the attendees…..there was a motion called for to adjourn the Quarterly Convention meeting of the Association.
This motion was made by Mr. R. Maid. The motion was approved by acclimation by the attendees.
The Closing Benediction was offered by the Acting Association Chaplain, Mr. Donald H. Fox.

The 50/50 was won by Mr. Dean Wescott.

Total attendance was 38 members.

Time of adjournment was 9:40 PM.
